Film Opening - First Edit

Last week, Becky and I finished our first initial edit of out film opening with some of the titles we wanted to include. Using Final Cut Express, we sorted and picked the clips that we wanted to use. This totalled to about 7 minutes of footage which meant that we needed to then cut them down to fit the 2 minutes time limit. Referencing our storyboard for the rough timing I had suggested, we managed to cut these clips down to just below 2 minutes which allowed us some time for titles to be added in.

I learnt how to use the program LiveType and created some basic but more interesting and animated titles that the ones that Final Cut offers. We used a typewriter style font called '1942 Report' that we downloaded off the website DaFont. We added a fade in and fade out effect called Serpentine which we both agreed worked and looked good for our style of film.

For our music we used the pen tool to create markers at the start of the track and the point in which we wanted it to play full volume by, to allow the music to fade in and out. This created a much smoother transition between each track as we have used 3 different tracks which have different sounds and styles to them and didn't sound very good just placed next to each other with no fading.

We added in transition effect such as cross fades which make the clip fade to black and then into the next clip. This adds a very smooth change between clips and by doing this, makes the clips more softer and less jumpy which fits the style of the music for example in the getting ready scene much better than short jumpy cuts would.

This is our first edit of out film opening. Youtube has made the colours of some of the scene look a bit weird and not like they look on Final Cut however this should be able to be fixed. Also, we are missing the titles for Emily & Jay.

Final Music Choices

Becky and I have decided to try out a few different tracks of music to give a diferent feel and atmosphere to each 'set' of clips. I have downloaded four pieces of music that we can use for our film opening.
We have decided to try the following for each scene:

Getting Ready
- Ludovico Einaudi - 'Primavera'
Dinner Date
- Ludovico Einaudi - 'Crane Dance'
Running/Killing
- Charlie Clouser - 'Chase Jill'
- Charlie Clouser - 'Fifty Cal'

If we find that these clips do not work well with out film we will look for similar alternatives that fit our clips better.

Editing Our Opening.

As of last week, Becky and myself have been editing out film together using Final Cut Express. We have learnt how to use basic tool such as the cutting tool to cut up and shorten our clips. As we are using .MOV files it means we have to keep rendering each time we make a change or move a clip even slightly. This takes up a lot of time in which we could be using more effectively. However we have made good progress so far. We have learnt how to change the speed of a clip and have slowed down a clip to play in slow motion. We are also having a split screen effect for four sets of clips with two video's playing side by side simultaneously.

Final Filming Session.

On Friday night, Becky, Emily and Jay came round to my house after school where we filmed the rest of our film opening. This included the dinner date scene, killing scene, walking home scene and Jay's getting ready scene. We're both very pleased with the shots that we got and think that they'll work well in our film opening. Here is a shot for the walking home scene, where we decided to use the street light to capture their shadows whilst walking along the path:

Second Filming Session.

Today I completed filming for the forest scene. Me and Emily walked down to the location and filmed just before it got dark, luckily the sun was out and it had stopped raining which meant it wasn't too dark and we got good shots. Hopefully we shot enough footage and got everything that we needed.
Jay was unable to make todays shoot so we will have to organise filming for the dinner scene and his getting ready scene another time.

2nd Filming Session

Our next filming session will be Saturday 8th January. We will aim to complete all filming for our opening. In the afternoon, Emily will come round to mine and we will shoot the forest scene while it it still light outside. Later on, we will film the dinner scene at my house with Jay and then Jay's getting ready scene in the evening. Hopefully everything will go according to plan and we'll have everything we need to create our film opening.

Filming Changes

Unfortunately, I have been very ill this week and Emily also has been meaning that filming arrangements have had to be cancelled and changed. We had planned to film the forest and dinner scene last Friday however Emily was ill and unable to film. We have moved filming the dinner scene and Jay's getting ready scene to Saturday 8th in the evening when everyone is free and I should hopefully be slightly better then. For now me and Becky will work on editing our Preliminary Task and on editing the footage we got for Emily's getting ready scene.
